You'd be forgiven for thinking Central London is an odd place to base an architectural guide to Arts and Crafts architecture. This tour explores the urban context of a movement most commonly understood through the carefully composed houses of the countryside and the suburbs. Championing skilled craftsmanship in the decorative arts, the rise of the Arts and Crafts is characterised in reaction to industrialisation in the late 19th century, but its relationship to modernity is complex. Understanding it now is an interesting point of comparison to contemporary practice in the way we understand style, and consideration of the circumstances under which craft and making meet society.

This paper self-guided tour is part of a series of Pocket London tours exploring our city’s most compelling architecture featuring engaging text and images which can be enjoyed equally in the field or in the comfort of your home. Published once a month, Pocket London is available as a subscription or via our shop.
